Louis-Henri Murger, also known as Henri Murger and Henry Murger (27 March 1822 – 28 January 1861) was a French novelist and poet. He is chiefly distinguished as the author of Scènes de la vie de bohème, from his own experiences as a desperately poor writer living in a Parisian attic, and member of a loose club of friends who called themselves "the water drinkers" (because they were too poor to afford wine).

Colorful atmosphere and mostly vivid characters. Interesting to compare it to the Puccini opera that it inspired. Compared to the opera, Murger's original feels vaguely long-winded, but the same can be said of almost any literary work that is transformed for the stage. Certainly, I feel my time was well-spent reading it.

Bohemians of the Latin Quarter Henri Murger 9781533207715 Books Reviews

I have been involved with the Italian opera La Boheme and found that it was based on this novel. I want to find out more about the original story. Have not finish reading the book, but it helps me to appreciate more the opera.
CAUTION Students and educators might be troubled that this book is printed on demand and bears no publisher imprint. Nor does it identify the translator. Some people will read it only with some difficulty since the margins are narrow on the inner page edges and the print is very small. On the plus side, the book is attractive enough, it has a precreased spine, and the outer margins are broad.
Interesting to compare the book with La Boheme, makes you think about how a story is presented in opera versus in a novel. Also interesting as a document of an artistic counterculture of the 1840s in Paris, which at its heart is surprisingly modern. But poorly written, very wordy, archaic, and formless. In the end only read it if you love La Boheme and want to see where it came from.
I loved reading this. The language is florid but effective and pulls you in to the world of the bohemians. The characterization is rich and full of life. I recommend this to anyone, it's a great read.
Classic novel, I felt like I was in Paris in the 1800s
The episodic novel that inspired Puccini's La Boheme -- priceless!
I am reading this book right now. Although I found the Preface VERY hard to get through, I am really enjoying the book itself.
However, I was very disappointed to see a major error on the part of the publisher. Chapters 1 and 2 are the same EXACT things, even though the titles of the Chapters are different. Through google, I was able to determine that this is NOT how it is supposed to be. The Chapter 1 on google is totally different than what my edition shows. For the amount of money I paid for this book, I would expect better from the publisher. This is the reason for my lower than average rating. The title of Chapter 1 is "How the Bohemian Club was Formed" and now thanks to this error I will never know how it WAS formed!
However, I am pleasantly pleased by the writing style. I was thinking that an 1800s French book would be tough to read, but it's a comical book that has totally kept my interest so far. And I have to admit the design of the book is quite nice with the colorful photo of the cover. The book almost looks like a mini-textbook.
